What is ‘white concrete’ and how do we make our white concrete homewares?

White concrete is becoming increasingly popular in modern architecture, landscaping and interior design. Its clean, bright appearance makes it ideal for concrete worktops, decorative features, garden ornaments and minimalist building projects. With many homes embracing less bold colour and more calming palettes, white concrete homewares have gained in popularity. White concrete works, it blends well with other textures and materials, and appeals to those seeking a 'quiet luxury' aesthetic.

What is white concrete?

White concrete is a type of concrete mix made using white Portland cement, this cement is similar to ordinary grey cement but is white in colour due to the use of raw materials with very low iron and manganese content - the elements that normally give cement its grey colour.

White cement is combined with light-coloured aggregates producing a brilliant smooth finish that stands out from traditional grey concrete.

What materials are needed to make white concrete?

To achieve the cleanest, brightest results, you’ll need the right ingredients:

  • White Portland cement

  • Light-coloured sand

  • White or light aggregates

  • Water

  • Plasticizers

  • Titanium Dioxide pigment (optional)

The process

The dry ingredients are mixed together in the correct ratios and water is then added. The mixture is thoroughly combined with an electric paddle mixer.

The white concrete mix is then poured into our custom made silicone moulds and allowed to partially cure for 48 hours.

The design is then removed from the mould and allowed to cure for a minimum of seven days which is essential for strength and colour retention.

We then apply a penetrative matt sealer to prevent staining of the white concrete.

In conclusion

Making white concrete requires an understanding of right materials and ratios. By using white Portland cement, light aggregates, and careful mixing techniques, we create beautiful, durable concrete design that will brighten any space.
